From Personal Struggle to Notion Innovation
My journey away from Best Buy Health as a Senior UX Designer began not with a leap but with a slow pivot. I wanted to find the perfect role, so I took my time and tracked my hopes, desires, and progress in my favorite personal tool: Notion.
Being a UX designer with ADHD, I naturally gravitated towards creating a detailed organizational system. I produced an intricate tracking database in Notion that listed the companies, interviews, and stages of the applications I was pursuing. As my job hunt progressed, so did the refinement of this database.
Soon, offers began to arrive from both big names and ambitious startups, each with its own complex offer package. This influx of opportunities led me to evolve my job hunting progress tracker into a comprehensive offer and negotiation tracker.
The template reached what I initially thought was its natural endpoint after I landed what seemed like my dream job at Amazon Halo — a perfect blend of health, tech, and financial stability. However, an unforeseen twist occurred when, just eight months later, the entire organization was shut down, leaving many of us unexpectedly back in the job market.
This turn of events led me to not only use my Notion tracker once again but also refine it for a broader audience, especially for those who found themselves job hunting under similar circumstances. To ensure the template’s broad applicability, I embarked on a series of beta tests with a diverse group of users, ranging from Notion experts to novices. This feedback was crucial in refining the template into a more versatile and user-friendly tool.
As a result, the Comprehensive Job Guide was born. Initially a personal project, it has evolved into a sophisticated job-hunting solution, now available on platforms like Gumroad and Notion Insider. It even earned a feature on Notion’s official website. What began as a personal tool for organizing my job search journey has transformed into a robust solution for many others navigating the complexities of the job market.
